- Silver's pure, living alchemical spirit and the refined essence of cold and moisture.
- The Green Lion
- The stem and root of the radical essence of metals. The alchemical male, or Sun, resists the action of fire and is the fixed part of matter before its alchemical preparation.
- The Red Lion
- The same alchemical male after being prepared and perfected by Mercury. This is the lion pictured in the Tarot Key named Strength.
- The Old Lion
- The fixed part of the Philosopher’s Stone is the principle of the whole.
- The Black Dragon
- Alchemical death, putrefaction, and change. The name describes the part of the secret alchemical laboratory where matter passes through its preparatory stage of putrefaction and change.
- The King
- The Sulphur of the Sages. Philosophical gold, represented by Tiphareth, the Microprosopus or Lesser Countenance. The Lion and the King are two symbols of the same thing.
- The Queen
- Whiteness, analogous to Silver and the Moon. On the Tree of Life, the Queen is Malkuth, the Bride of the Microprosopus.
